Getting to Birmingham and the University of Birmingham campus
The University of Birmingham is in Edgbaston and has its own dedicated campus train station, called simply ‘University’. Below is some basic information to help you get to Birmingham and the campus.
Flying
The nearest airport is Birmingham International, which is a 30-minute train ride to/from campus. Trains run every 5 to 25 minutes, via Birmingham New Street (total journey time 30 to 40 minutes).
London Heathrow and London Gatwick are relatively near and also well connected to Birmingham by train (see https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/) or coach (see http://www.nationalexpress.com).
Travelling by train
From London, the most direct route is London Euston to Birmingham New Street (~1.5 hours), then New Street to University (5 to 7 minutes). Trains from New Street are every 10 to 20 minutes.
If travelling from elsewhere in the UK, trains run regularly to New Street and University from all over the country (see https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/).
Travelling by bus
Local routes 61, 63, 41, 48, 76, X21, X22, 19, 20, 20A stop at the University campus and link to the city centre. For more information see https://nxbus.co.uk/west-midlands.
Travelling by car
Visitor parking is on Floors 1 to 5 of the University North East Car Park, Pritchatts Road, B15 2SA. Charges apply between 08:00 and 18:00. You can pay by cash, card, or online after registering with RingGo (see https://www.myringgo.co.uk/register).
Getting to the School of Chemistry, Molecular Sciences Building (MSB)
Arriving from the campus train station (‘University’)
Exit the train station by going up the steps and following signs for the University Campus. At the top of the steps, turn right, following signs for the University Campus. This will take you to several flights of steps leading down onto campus. Descend the steps and follow Westgate leftwards around the Murray Learning Centre, then north-east, where the MSB is on your left. Turn left at the top of Westgate to enter the MSB via the main entrance.
Arriving by car
Navigate to the campus train station (Westgate, Birmingham B15 2GB). Drive past the station, along Westgate as it bears left around the Murray Learning Centre, then north-east towards the library. Turn left at the top of Westgate and the MSB main entrance will be on your left.
Upon arrival, contact Steve (s.m.goldup@bham.ac.uk), who will let you into the building. Steve’s office is on floor 3, room 3035.
